FEMA, the Puerto Rico Department of Natural Resources, The U.S. Department of Interior, NOAA, Force Blue, local dive shops and many other partners collaborate to restore the coral reefs in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean after the damages suffered due to Hurricanes Irma and Maria. Coral reefs are beneficial protect our shores, reduce the impact of waves, provide a healthy eco-system for fish to grow and develop and is an important element in coastal tourism. However, coral reefs have been weakened due to the effects of Hurricane Maria, the March 5 tidal wave event, and human intervention. The mission focuses on coral reef damage assessment, emergency restoration, and long-term recovery planning.
